TomTom Patent Discovered - Live Video Overlay?

Click on the picture below :

Picture003

What is this ? It's a an interesting patent filed by TomTom last year that has been discovered in the records of the European Patent Office.

Picture004 The device marries a live in-car video feed overlaid with navigation data so that you get a 3D map on top of an actual real world view! Yes, it's a sort of  "we might do this next year or the year after : anyway we have patented, we'll do it before anyone" type thing from TomTom.

TomTom and Garmin making cellphones ?

Exclamation768653_2Speculation of the day : According to Digitimes, Garmin has held talks with Compal Communications (a Taiwan-based handset maker) in order to enter the cell phone handset market !! The article goes on to say, following the introduction of the TomTom GO 715 with a SIM card, that this raised "market speculation that TomTom eventually may move into the GPS handset segment."

So PND manufacturers are finally making a move into the GPS-enabled cell phone market ? In the long run, this could mean that all phones will come with built-in GPS  and nobody will want to spend money on a stand-alone GPS navigation system.  Let's wait and see !
