Finding a good restaurant with your iPhone

Fork-and-knife-for-dine-about-town Imagine its your birthday, anniversary or you are celebrating a very special occasion! And for this special occasion you would like to go out to a yummy restaurant or a fancy bar with your friends. What would your first step be?

Well, last night, I was organizing a night out with friends to celebrate my birthday. To search for a great restaurant I had two options:

  • either go to a restaurant I already knew,
  • or get a (good) suggestion

The first option didn't work out. I had no precise idea, I had left my restaurant cards at home and anyway, I wanted to discover some new place.

So, how could I get a good suggestion ?

What was important to me was to screen restaurants according to their quality, style, price, location. More importantly, I needed to trust the suggestion.

I could have opened a guide (i.e. Zagat, Michelin) or called a friend who shares my taste, or browsed a couple of web sites (i.e. Yelp, OpenTable, Qype, etc). Instead, I figured I would try using my iPhone, and I downloaded a few applications, such as:

  • some apps which provide editorial content (Zagat, Michelin, I in the City)
  • some which collect and monitor user-generated content (AroundMe, Qype, DisMoiOu)

Well, it didn't quiet work out and I eventually ended up calling a friend for a good suggestion (I went to MamaShelter) !

But before I tell you why I got frustrated, I'd like to ask you: do you use your iPhone or telephone to search for a restaurant ? Do you know a good iPhone app to search for a good restaurant ?

App Store to be released soon!

IphoneappstoreThe App Store is going to be released soon. It is the new market place within iTunes next to the iTunes Music Store. It allows individuals or companies to distribute iPhone / iPod Touch applications either for free or not. The App Store is also responsible for seamless downloads, installation and software updates

The main condition to participate to the App Store is to apply to an iPhone Developer Program and get ready with your iPhone / iPod Touch app.
In case an application is meant to be sold, 70% of the revenues goes to the developer / the company and the remaining 30% goes to Apple. The hosting, the global distribution and the payment processing is free of charge.

Right now, a lot of iPhone applications are ready to be distributed on the App Store. It is just a matter of days before Apple releases the App Store and becomes one of the most powerful online market place to sell media for mobile devices including both iPod family and iPhones.

Is the iPhone revolutionizing LBS ?

Iphone The Apple iPhone has shipped more than five millions units worldwide since its lunch in 2007.  We believe that the iPhone will bring consumer awareness to LBS- type applications and markets for the following reasons :

  • The iPhone has a great screen for LBS applications, which is clearer than any PNDs and user-friendly for the LBS of  pedestrian navigation
  • The iPhone uses a combination of Skyhook Wireless' technology to do a initial Wi-Fi position (WPS) fix. If no Wi-FI access points are detected then it relies on Google's my location feature which is based on cell tower location information. It means that the absence of organic GPS is not a big deal if you want to search the nearest pizza on the iPhone.
  • The Google-Maps application on iPhone is user-friendly and ergonomic:  easy to find restaurants, gas stations, get driving directions with the local search.. And it also enables poi creation and turn by turn navigation.
  • The iPhone operates on the EDGE data network which provides up to three times the data capacity of GPRS, so advanced mobile services works well on the iPhone  and the network is fast enough to zoom in an out on LBS application.
  • With the iPhone software development kit, which allows third-party programmers to create applications for the iPhone, many application will benefit from iPhone fonctionnalities (touch screen, google maps, location, big memory, adress book, connectivity, calendar ...)
  • Accurate digital maps and related content are the foundation of powerful location-based services and applications and with all the social platforms launching their web application for iPhone, users can have more personalized experience from their devices.
