Tele Atlas launches scenic road content in the US

Picture001 Tele Atlas announced yesterday the launch of "Tele Atlas Touring Series", a digital map product featuring content and scenic route information from the popular “Get Outta Town” series from MAD MAPS, a specialist of scenic touring in the United States.

MAD Maps has launched “Get Outta Town” maps last year so that americans escape from the hustle and bustle of crowded subways and noisy streets to quieter, more scenic and out-of-the-ordinary roads.  And now Tele Atlas,  the leading provider of digital maps offers these scenic road trip maps with valuable route and point of interest like great roadside diners, fresh food farm stands, charming old town inns and award winning wineries to its users.

TeleAtlas Touring series shows the rising importance of personalized navigation offering : that means in the very near futur, we'll see a lot of collaboration between the leading map providers and companies specialized in GPS contents and services, like Navx :-)

ps. Tele Atlas Touring Series are currently available for 30 U.S. cities, including Boston, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Los Angeles, Miami, Orlando, San Diego, San Francisco and Washington, DC. Each series will feature five to seven routes for scenic road trips to help guide digital map users on a variety of excursions with turn-by-turn directions and a range of POIs such as local roadhouses, roadside attractions and recreational areas.

Breaking (and geocoded) news on MediaScrape

Picture002

It's cool to find news by clicking on a map, isnt'it ? Well in 2006, a Montreal-based  "Internet TV News Network" has been launched to deliver free, all-video broadcast news clips using Web technology.

First it was called MediaScrape, then it changed its name to Internet Broadcast Corp. (and the to URL NuVu.tv) then back again to the original name with a new site redesign, a new Google Maps integration, more content providers, new funding. (It was Youtube in fact that insisted for the original name). The site made partnership with YouTube to provide language-specific content to YouTube's regional sites, like YouTube UK, Ireland, Brazil, Turkey, and so on...

The idea is of course to digitize analogue TV broadcasts in a format that is high-quality video, on-demand, translated on location, interactive, free, searchable and archived. And now MediaScrape is a Google NewsMap which is partnered directly with broadcast news outlets such as the BBC, CBC, Asia News International and 25 other leading global news broadcasters.

Their database has 35,000 news clips : to get started you can click on a region to see top news clips plotted to a Google Map based on their specific location.

handset navigation users will reach 43 million in 2012

Picture001 In this new market report, Berg Insight forecasts a high growth on the US and European markets for maps and navigation in handsets. Let's see numbers : mobile subscribers accessing maps and downloading routes using their mobile handsets in Europe and the USA is expected to grow from 4 million users in 2007 to 43 million users in 2012 !

This growth makes sens with the introduction of GPS-technology in smartphone handsets and bundling of navigation and map content with mobile devices. Today, PND continues to dominate the navigation market but more and more handset owners discover handset-based mapping and turn-by-turn navigation services (which are increasingly being integrated into one service with a common user interface).

So in the future handset navigation services will also complement other personal navigation solutions, like the use outside the car (pedestrians, commuters and travellers..) New solutions will also require new services - like advertisement funded services. According to the report, ad-funded services will account for an increasing share of the mobile navigation market. Navigation fits perfectly with local search applications that offer completely new opportunities for advertisers to target consumers in novel ways.  Anyway the mobile industry players have to embrace the ad-funded service model in order to stay competitive on the emerging market.

Virtual real estate

Today's "thanks god it's friday" subject  isn't about this excellent website  geopipi.com (discover it by yourself :-), but...architectural visualisation. Indusgeeks have uploaded a movie to YouTube to show that the ability to visualise, communicate and populate real estate is real, cheap and more importantly easy to do with today's toolset.

The idea is to divide virtual real estate into 3 parts (so that your clients could visualise the design)

  1. Location - Visualisation via Google Earth
  2. Scrutiny - Examining the building in 3D Max
  3. Second Life - Exploring the building within the virtual environment

What are we talking about ? Ok, look at the video and enjoy the music :

Toyota Yaris comes with "embedded" TomTom option

Picture001

TomTom announced at the Frankfurt auto show that "the latest Toyota Yaris will come with the option to include a TomTom PND as part of the Yaris' built-in radio. The cool thing is the clutter free system can fit right onto  Yaris’ dashboard; but at the same time it is portable, so no problem if you need to use it on foot or in another vehicle.

Bringing navigation experience into the automotive industry is TomTom's long term business strategy. We have already talked about TomTom efforts to make the PND's embedded. The first steps was the commercialisation of the TomTom Car Connect Kit, then their partnership with Seat for a semi-integrated solution, and another partnership with Johnson Controls for a Bluetooth kit. So clearly TomTom changes the 'weak' point:  integrated GPS systems will be part of their products...

"SFR Navigation" with Mappy !

Logos

A first in GPS navigation market : French mobile operator SFR is establishing a partnership with Mappy to launch unlimited GPS navigation offer on mobile !

This collaboration is a great step into the french market because mobile network operators have only recently begun offering navigation services in Europe. (At the end of Q1 2006, less than 20 out of around 70 mobile operators in Western and central Europe had launched off-board navigation services. In the US though, two out of four nationwide operators representing almost 50 percent of the total wireless customer base have launched navigation services )

So the "SFR navigation" integrates all GPS features like real time traffic information, fixed and mobile radars, itinerary calculations for pedestrian mode, points of interests..(Remember that  Mappy worked also with Appello, a sweden provider of mobile GPS navigation services  on online mobile navigation on java technology-maybe just to be prepared for this collaboration ?).

The  "SFR navigation" will be offered on Blackberry Curve 8310 (enjoy the presentation video here)

ps. The subscription price is really cool : 2€ per month for 12 hours of navigation, or 9.90€ illimited !

Dash Express redesigned for Q1 2008 launch

Dashexpressanglethumb

Remember the old Dash Navigation GPS with a nostalgic look–kind of like a giant, vintage 1983 HP calculator- ? (he says that !) Well, it's gone because the Dash guys have been working on a new design for many months now. The needed makeover comes with a larger 4.3inch display, louder speaker, and power connector on the dash mount instead of the navigator.
This is really cool that Dash redesigned and optimized their device (also with a little help from the beta testers !) Looking forward to  know more...

TomTom/TeleAtlas: Canalys point of view

We are back from Barcelona, where Canalys was holding its annual forum on GPS. Obviously, one of the hottest topic was about TomTom acquiring TeleAtlas. Does the deal make sense ? What will TeleAtlas' clients do ? Will Navteq be swallowed ? By whom ? Microsoft ? Google ? Garmin ?

Let's us share with you what Chris Jones, Director at Canalys, said yesterday:

Google Earth in The Economist

Economist_logo The Economist published an article this week about the emerging architecture of geoweb and  Google Earth. It says that downloaded 250m times since 2005, "Google Earth is turning into a map of historical significance".
The article also mentions the combination of virtual maps with other sources of data in mash-ups. (According to Google, its maps are used in more than 4m of mash-ups)

Here is the list of mash-ups mentioned :

- housingmaps.com : san francisco apartment listings from craiglist.
- platial.com : free mash-up tools for bloggers (also called "autobiogeography")
- zillow.com : to create maps of home prices in America
- gasbuddy.com : petrol prices for USA and Canada
-exploreourpla.net : global warming and climat change
-heywhatsthat.com : diagram of mountain peaks

Picture003

It's also said that the incorporation of satellite-positioning technology into mobile phones ans cars could open the floodgates. That was already demonstrated by Socialight, a mobile location aware application that allows you to take notes about places you go by in the street so that when your friends go around the same place get notifications on their cellphones about your notes.

So that's why the head of GE adds : Taken further, the map becomes a portal on to life itselfs. And the only thing that can hold it back, is the rate at which society can adapt.

3D Navigation

No doubt, the next market for 3D cities is in-car usage for satellite navigation devices. TeleAtlas has already been working to launch 30 cities in the next few months. In fact, the ability to present the highly detailed 3D models  was achieved through a new  technology developed by GTA Geoinformatik GmbH, a German company with extensive experience in 3D geo-referenced visualization and modelling. And according to TeleAtlas, application developers are provided a range of options, from colored block models to colored facades and roofs with detailed texture with this technology :

And there is also an official announcement: Mio C620 will include 3-D maps by Tele Atlas. If you want to see what it may look like :

Mapufacture, a cool geo-aggregator

Picture001

Have you heard about Mapufacture ? It's is a very cool service (annonced last year by Mikel Maron) to browse, build and share interactive web maps. It combines user-created geodata with freely available worldwide satellite and mapping imagery, and location databases. In other words, it provides a nice, simple, graphical interface for defining your “area of interest” by zooming in on a GoogleMap. After selecting your area, and creating the map name and description, you can add feeds to the map. Ex, Le Monde News :
