TomTom interested in mobile phone market

Picture001 TomTom, the Europe's market leader in portable navigation devices plans to develop its services by offering in-car GPS . The general manager Harold Goddijin declared to Reuters that TomTom is also interested in the mobile phone market. We saw this coming, no ? There have been speculations about the dutch navigation systems company moving into the GPS handset segment and apprently it's true ! The fact that a leader PND manufacturer like TomTom  making a move into the GPS-enabled cell phone market, and built-in navigation device sector collaborating with different car manufacturers, gives some ideas for the next generations navigation systems.

If not, here are the main points :

  • Fed up with your mechanic GPS voices ? There is a solution : Navx offers different voices for your navigation system (a celebrity, a dialect or just a funny one ). Try it if you want to turn a boring journey into something more... entertaining.
  • In addition to its voices catalogue, Navx offers different contents and real time services like positions of radars and dangerous zones, availability of  parkings, the famous guide Gault-Millau and develops a Community platform connecting the GPS to Internet, allowing the visualization of geographical information by all the users. Points of interests, traces and personal data could be visualized and shared through the Navx platform.
  • Navx had a fund-raising of 3 million euros by Innoven Partenaires ; this fund-raising will help  Navx to accelerate its development in France and Europe in an emerging market of the geolocalized contents.

New LG GPS line released

Lgln735003LG released today the new GPS device LN-735, announced in january, at CES2007. With 3.5″  LCD screen, 3hr Battery Life and 2GB Built in Flash Memory, the LN-735 ($350) is not the only option of the line. Have a look to LN-740  if you want something more advanced. This second one has a bright 4-inch display and a slim design, pre-loaded USA and Canada map with millions of POIs, access to traffic data service via a supplied RDS-TMC. But if you don't want to pay $450, head the other direction, LN-730 which costs 300$, it's also good. This device includes 2D or 3D map options, day and night screen modes, high-power speaker output and up to a four-hour battery life.

The new Mio DMB C317 -only for Korea-

20070423152151483 Mio unveiled a new GPS device : the C317 with a DMB receiver for watching TV ! Attention, might be too dangerous to put on your dashboard :-) The device has 4.3″ color transmissive LCD screen and has also DMB recording capability so you can concentrate on your driving.  The Mio C317 integrates a battery that should last around 5.5 hours for navigation, and 4 hours for TV watching and it features a SiRF Star III GPS receiver. Will it ever make it to Europe or North America? No news for the moment. But we like the idea. Via and.

First Round in Google Earth

President_25 Google released the French presidential Election results -1st round- in Google Earth, have you seen it ? Francophone version of GE shows detailed results of the first round, but Ogle Earth reports that the layer isn't available in other language versions of Google Earth.
